Events OfferedWe will be offering four main events at every tournament.
We encourage middle school debate programs to offer these these four at minimum. |
Public ForumPublic Forum, a partner debate as well, was initially created to appeal to the common people, hence its concise style and relevance to current events that many debaters will already be familiar with. The topic changes every month.
|
Lincoln DouglasLincoln-Douglas is often referred to as “values” debate because it uniquely places heavy emphasis on analytical arguments, values, and philosophy applied to current issues. It’s distinctive as a debate form because it is one-on-one, instead of a partner event. There is a new topic every other month.

ParliamentaryParliamentary debate is modeled off of the English Parliament, best known for its extemporaneous nature. Participants have 20 minutes to work with their partners to prepare cases either affirming or negating a given resolution, with no prior prep necessary.
|
SpeechIn all interpretive and original events, competitors write or select a piece of literature, then bring it to life through the creative use of voice, movement, and facial expression. All original and interpretation speeches have a 10 minute time limit (except Extemporaneous and Impromptu).
Speech events include, but are not limited to: Expository, Impromptu, NI, Oratorical, Dramatic, Duo |
Policy
Policy is a two-on-two debate event that focuses on one topic for the entire academic year. The affirmative team must propose a plan to enact a policy, while the negative team must offer reasons to reject that proposal.
This is a new event for SDMS Debate League. It will be offered at the Spring 2019 invitational! |
